How We Work

To bring about the kinds of changes that will help people live healthier and more productive lives, we seek to understand the world’s inequities. We listen and learn so we can identify pressing problems that get too little attention. Then we consider whether we can make a meaningful difference with our influence and our investments, whether it is a grant or a contract. Once we commit to an area of need, we define our major goals and identify a clear path to achieving them.

What We Do Not Fund

The foundation is unable to make grants directly to individuals.

The majority of our funding is proactive and made to non-profit tax-exempt organizations that are independently identified by our staff.

Please keep in mind that although your project may appear to fall under the guidelines of what we fund, the area of funding may not accept unsolicited proposals.

Examples of areas the foundation does not fund:

  • Direct donations or grants to individuals
  • Projects addressing health problems in developed countries
  • Political campaigns and legislative lobbying efforts
  • Building or capital campaigns
  • Projects that exclusively serve religious purposes
